The Kinetic Interface

I have been interested in the intersections of dance and technology ever since I met choreographer Jose Bustamante (former co-director of the acclaimed and recently closed Sharir-Bustamante Danceworks) during my graduate studies at the University of Texas. Jose and I had a series of conversations about an augmented-reality dance piece that we were going to co-produce. That project never came to pass, but the ideas we talked about stuck with me. The Kinetic Interface blog on Great Dance is well worth checking out if you are interested in this sort of thing. Recent posts about an interactive dance installation called “Body Navigation”, Radiohead’s House of Cards video, new human-computer interfaces, and this motion capture dance animation will all be of interest to the AMODA community. I would love to see AMODA bring this type of work to Austin at one of our Digital Showcase or Performance Series events.

Hi Doug,

I don’t have a dance background to speak of, other than attending performances (and embarrassing myself at parties, of course). My only foray into the world of dance production was the short-lived collaboration with José Bustamante during my time studying architectural theory in the Advanced Design Research graduate program at the University of Texas at Austin. However, as an observer I find this stuff very interesting, and I would like to see AMODA incorporate dance into its programming in the future.

Jose Bustamante here. I accidentally reached your page looking for reviews and comments about Sharir + Bustamante Danceworks as I am trying to put a portfolio together for an MFA program that am completing.
It’s been a while since architecture school. Any way, I looked at the work by the Recoil Performance Group and was surprised because I have been doing or Trying to do that kind of work for a while but I have been approaching it, primarily, from a video and animation perspective as I do not know any programers or interface designers.
It was nice to remember that one has ties that go back in time and it would be great to meet and talk sometime.
